Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, and the Road to Recovery

Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, and the Road to Recovery
By:"Barry Stimmel"
Published on 2002 by Psychology Press

Gain a fuller understanding of substance addiction and treatment options! Originally published in 1992 as The Facts About Drug Use, this updated edition contains new information about the effects of alcohol and recreational, mood-altering drugs on the body. The multiple causes of drug use and the options available to those dependent on drugs as a way of life are thoroughly and clearly described. Drug use affects nearly 1 out of 2 Americans and cuts across every social and economic boundary. The effects of addiction on the individual are great, and the cumulative effects on society are staggering. Knowledge of the adverse effects of mood-altering drugs and why and how they are used excessively is a centerpiece of this book. It presents, intelligently and interestingly, ways to identify persons at risk and identify problems that the addicted encounter in attempts to become drug free. Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, and the Road to Recovery: Life on the Edge is an essential tool in both finding available resources for drug users and developing appropriate responses to today's drug problem. This remarkable, well-referenced book enables those with little or no background in science or health care to understand the complex issues surrounding drug use. It provides current, reliable, and unbiased information on methods for dealing with dependency upon alcohol and central nervous system depressants, hallucinogens, heroin, nicotine, marijuana, caffeine, amphetamines, designer drugs like Ecstasy, and steroids. A glossary listing common street names for drugs will be invaluable to those interested in identifying specific substances. This comprehensive volume will show you: who typically uses drugs and the reasons why they do how to classify mood-altering drugs how to identify and treat drug dependency areas of special concern such as multiple drug use, AIDS and drug use, drugs and pregnancy, drugs and sports, and drug testing technology Chapter by chapter, this nonjudgmental book helps readers develop a better understanding of the effects of mood-altering substances and the reasons many continue to use them despite serious consequences. This is a valuable key to the nature of dependency and addiction, and the external forces (including poverty and homelessness) that promote such behavior.

Takarazuka

Takarazuka
By:"Jennifer Robertson"
Published on 1998-07-21 by Univ of California Press

The all-female Takarazuka Revue is world-famous today for its rococo musical productions, including gender-bending love stories, torridly romantic liaisons in foreign settings, and fanatically devoted fans. But that is only a small part of its complicated and complicit performance history. In this sophisticated and historically grounded analysis, anthropologist Jennifer Robertson draws from over a decade of fieldwork and archival research to explore how the Revue illuminates discourses of sexual politics, nationalism, imperialism, and popular culture in twentieth-century Japan. The Revue was founded in 1913 as a novel counterpart to the all-male Kabuki theater. Tracing the contradictory meanings of Takarazuka productions over time, with special attention to the World War II period, Robertson illuminates the intricate web of relationships among managers, directors, actors, fans, and social critics, whose clashes and compromises textured the theater and the wider society in colorful and complex ways. Using Takarazuka as a key to understanding the \

Concepts of Chemical Dependency
By:"Harold E. Doweiko"
Published on 2014-03-14 by Cengage Learning

CONCEPTS OF CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY, Ninth Edition, provides comprehensive coverage and the latest information on a full spectrum of substance use disorders and the compounds commonly abused. Topics include the abuse of and addiction to alcohol; how the active agent in marijuana, THC, affects neural growth and development; the emerging body of evidence suggesting a relationship between marijuana abuse and psychotic disorders; the emerging body of evidence suggesting that marijuana is not as benign as it was thought to be a few years ago; and the abuse of cough syrups. Adding to the book's usefulness and relevance, Doweiko also covers topics not usually discussed in other substance abuse texts, including abuse of anabolic steroids, inhalants, infectious diseases associated with substance abuse, how the “war on drugs” has actually contributed to the problem of substance abuse/addiction in this country, and the “medical marijuana” debate. This edition includes new information on synthetic marijuana, mephredone, and dextromethorphan, among other substances; updates reflecting the new DSM-5; and a new chapter on the Biopsychosocial Model of Addiction. Students report that they appreciate the author's balanced approach, which allows them to form their own opinions, in contrast to some books that “preach” that “drugs are bad for you.” Important Notice: Media content referenced within the product description or the product text may not be available in the ebook version.

The Happiness Diet

The Happiness Diet
By:"Tyler Graham","Drew Ramsey"
Published on 2012-12-11 by Rodale

For the first time in history, too much food is making us sick. It's all too apparent that the Modern American Diet (MAD) is expanding our waistlines; what's less obvious is that it's starving and shrinking our brains. Rates of obesity and depression have recently doubled, and while these epidemics are closely linked, few experts are connecting the dots for the average American. Using the latest data from the rapidly changing fields of neuroscience and nutrition, The Happiness Diet shows that over the past several generations small, seemingly insignificant changes to our diet have stripped it of nutrients--like magnesium, vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D, as well as some very special fats--that are essential for happy, well-balanced brains. These shifts also explain the overabundance of mood-destroying foods in the average American's diet and why they predispose most of us to excessive weight gain. After a clear explanation of how we've all been led so far astray, The Happiness Diet empowers the reader with simple, straightforward solutions. Graham and Ramsey show you how to steer clear of this MAD way of life with foods to swear off, shopping tips, brain-building recipes, and other practical advice, and then remake your diet by doubling down on feel-good foods--even the all-American burger.

Chaucer's Sexual Poetics

Chaucer's Sexual Poetics
By:"Carolyn Dinshaw"
Published on 1989 by Univ of Wisconsin Press

Through an analysis of the poems Chaucers wordes Unto Adam, His Owne Scriveyn, Troilus and Criseyde, the Legend of Good Women, the Man of Law’s Tale, the Wife of Bath’s Tale and its Prologue, the Clerk’s Tale, and the Pardoner’s Tale, Carolyn Dinshaw offers a provocative argument on medieval sexual constructs and Chaucer’s role in shaping them. Operating under the assumption that people read and write certain ways based upon society’s demands, Dinshaw examines gender identity and the effects of a patriarchal society. The focal point of Dinshaw’s argument is the idea that the literary text can be seen as the female body while any literary activities upon the text are decidedly male. Through a series of six provocative essays, Dinshaw argues that Chaucer was not only aware that gender is a social construction, but that he self-consciously worked to oppose the dominance of masculinity that a patriarchal society places on texts by creating works in which gender identity and hierarchy were more fluid.

Atomic Fitness

Atomic Fitness
By:"Steve Michalik"
Published on 2006 by Basic Health Publications, Inc.

World-famous bodybuilder, Steve Michalik-Mr. America- has put a lifetime of knowledge and skill into this powerful new book, Atomic Fitness. His extensive background of accomplishments and experience have led him to develop the concept for his Atomic Fitness System, which utilizes the basic theories of physics-energy, matter, space, and time-to help people change their physiques in the shortest time possible. This comprehensive guide to the physiological and psychological aspects of training to achieve a more perfect build naturally, without the use of steroids or other drugs, is clearly laid out in steps that take readers down the road of mind over body to overcome barriers that might be keeping them from their mental and physical goals.Part one of this book lays out Mr. America's personally developed theories. His easy-to-understand exercises start with preconditioning routines to provide a foundation of optimum fitness levels for the real work to follow, and theyprogress from the beginning, intermediate, and advanced, to super-advanced routines. Sections on abdominals, hips, and glutes are included in the exercises intended to create the ultimate physique. The author believes it's not the length of time or the amount of exercise that count, it's the intensity of effort that improves an exercise and makes it successful. More is not better, he says-hard work in brief intensive training sessions is what produces the best possible results from exercise.Part two takes up the body's basic anatomy and explores the role of nutrition in depth. This is followed by selected recipes for maximum benefits to the body, testimonials from people he has helped, a glossary of nutrition terms, several appendices, and a full index. Throughout this information-packed book, the author's positive approach exhorts the reader to think, do, and be the absolute best possible.

Sexual Meanings

Sexual Meanings
By:"Sherry B. Ortner"
Published on 1981-11-30 by CUP Archive

This 1996 collection of essays deals with the ways in which sex and gender are socially organized and conceptually construed in various cultures. Its scope is not limited to a series of cross-cultural issues of sex roles and sexual status but rather encompasses a wide range of sex-related practices and beliefs. Ceremonial virginity in Polynesian ritual androgynism in New Guinea, the valorization of young African bachelors, and fantasies of male self-sufficiency in South American myth are among the subjects discussed. Taken in their totality, these essays demonstrate that cultural notions sexuality and gender are seldom straightforward extrapolations of biological facts but are the outcome of social and cultural processes. The book is not only a compendium of symbolic approaches to gender but is also an important statement of the theoretical directions in anthropological research in this field.

Modern Japanese Art and the Meiji State

Modern Japanese Art and the Meiji State
By:"Dōshin Satō"
Published on 2011 by Getty Publications

This is an insightful and intelligent re-thinking of Japanese art history & its Western influences. This broad-ranging and profoundly influential analysis describes how Western art institutions and vocabulary were transplanted to Japan in the late nineteenth century. In the 1870-80s, artists and government administrators in Japan encountered the Western 'system of the arts' for the first time. Under pressure to exhibit and sell its artistic products abroad, Japan's new Meiji government came face-to-face with the need to create European-style art schools and museums - and even to establish Japanese words for art, painting, artist, and sculpture. \

The Alcoholic Society

The Alcoholic Society
By:"Norman Kent Denzin"
Published on 1993-01-01 by Transaction Publishers

Offering a unique theoretical foundation to understanding the lived experience of the active alcoholic, Denzin asserts that alcoholism is a disease in which negative emotions divide the self into warring, inner factions, fueled and distorted by alcoholic intoxication. The work is solidly anchored in a long-term study of the socialization experiences that began in alcoholism treatment centers and continue in Alcoholics Anonymous recovery programs. It covers the treatment process, the restructuring of self, the alcoholic's interaction with his recovery treatment program, and the modalities of self-transcendence that result from treatment.

Sexual Harassment of Working Women

Sexual Harassment of Working Women
By:"Catharine A. MacKinnon"
Published on 1979 by Yale University Press

Sexual harassment of working women has been widely practiced and systematically ignored. Men’s control over women’s jobs has often made coerced sexual relations the price of women’s material survival. Considered trivial or personal, or natural and inevitable, sexual harassment has become a social institution. MacKinnon offers here a attempt to understand sexual harassment as a pervasive social problem and to present a legal argument that it is discrimination based on sex. Beginning with an analysis of victims' experiences, she then examines sex discrimination doctrine as a whole, both for its potential in prohibiting sexual harassment and for its limitations.

The Healing Journey for Adult Children of Alcoholics

The Healing Journey for Adult Children of Alcoholics
By:"Daryl E. Quick"
Published on 2009-10-21 by InterVarsity Press

I feel like people leave me abandoned all the time. Sometimes I'm so afraid for what seems like no reason. I just don't seem to have any energy. Why do the same thoughts keep racing through my mind? I usually don't feel happy or sad. If there isn't real excitement, I feel bored. I want to be close to people, but I just never make it. Do you see yourself in this list? Children of alcoholic parents have suffered wounds that affect their lives for years to come. They learn to protect themselves from the pattern of hurt that they have come to expect in life.
