Why Diets Fail (Because You're Addicted to Sugar)

Why Diets Fail (Because You're Addicted to Sugar)
By:"Nicole M. Avena, Ph.D.","John R. Talbott"
Published on 2013-12-31 by Ten Speed Press

This revolutionary eating plan reveals definitive proof that sugar is addictive, and presents the first science-based program to cut out the sugar, stop the cravings that cause most diets to eventually fail, and lose weight--permanently. If you’re like most people, you’ve tried a few (or maybe many) different diets without success. The truth is, most diets work for a while, but there’s usually a point at which the dietary restrictions become too difficult to maintain. Why? Because whether you’re following a low-carb, paleo, gluten-free, or even an all-liquid green juice diet, the addictive nature of sugar causes cravings to take over and sabotage your diet-of-the-moment. In Why Diets Fail, Dr. Nicole M. Avena and John R. Talbott reveal definitive proof that sugar is addictive and present the first science-based program to stop the cravings and lose weight—permanently. A neuroscientist and food addiction expert, Dr. Avena has conducted groundbreaking research showing that sugar triggers the same responses in the brain as addictive drugs like cocaine, nicotine, and alcohol. And like those other substances, the more sugar you eat, the more you need to get the same pleasurable feelings. (No wonder your last diet didn’t stick.) Avena and Talbott’s eight-step plan walks you through the process of going sugar-free and surviving the make-or-break withdrawal period—those first few weeks when your body feels the absence of its favorite sweetener most acutely. An easy-to-use Sugar Equivalency Table developed by Talbott lists the amount of sugar in hundreds of common foods so you know precisely what to eat and what to avoid. And when it comes to what you can eat, you have a lot to choose from. In fact, you’ll probably eat more on this diet than you normally do—while continuing to lose weight. This science-based program is the diet to end all diets. It will help you break the yo-yo dieting cycle, end those maddening sugar cravings, and develop a new longing for the good food that will keep you fit, healthy, and happy.

Practical Approaches to Alcoholism Psychotherapy

Practical Approaches to Alcoholism Psychotherapy
By:"Sheldon Zimberg"
Published on 2013-06-29 by Springer Science & Business Media

Sodetal attitudes toward alcoholism are characterized by several types of denial, with disastrous personal and sodal consequences. Refusal to admit the extent of alcoholism as a major national health problem leads to a public policy which allocates relatively few resources to research, prevention, treatment, or rehabilitation. On an individual basis, the combination of sodally approved drinking and the stigma assigned to the chronic alcoholic results in individuals blinding themselves to the existence of the problem in family, friend, and self until it has reached such an advanced or obvious degree that denial is no longer possible. There is the third kind of denial, exemplified by therapeutic de spair, which proclaims thatgaps in knowledge of the cause of alco holism are so great and failures to treat alcoholics successfully so dra matic that there is no assurance that efforts will lead to a positive outcome. This denial is perhaps the most troublesome because it re flects an attitude of therapeutic helplessness. It discourages families from seeking help, and it reinfOlces the tendency of physidans and other human-services workers to overlook the presence of alcoholism as they treat its physical, sodal, and economic consequences. Denial frequently surrounds those who treat alcoholics with an aura of hope lessness, which itself is a negative therapeutic force.

Sexual Morality in Ancient Rome

Sexual Morality in Ancient Rome
By:"Rebecca Langlands"
Published on 2006-05-25 by Cambridge University Press

Traditionally, scholars have approached Roman sexuality using categories of sexual ethics drawn from contemporary, Western society. In this 2006 book Dr Langlands seeks to move away from these towards a deeper understanding of the issues that mattered to the Romans themselves, and the ways in which they negotiated them, by focusing on the untranslatable concept of pudicitia (broadly meaning 'sexual virtue'). She offers a series of nuanced close readings of texts from a wide spectrum of Latin literature, including history, oratory, love poetry and Valerius Maximus' work Memorable Deeds and Sayings. Pudicitia emerges as a controversial and unsettled topic, at the heart of Roman debates about the difference between men and women, the relation between mind and body, and the ethics of power and status differentiation within Roman culture. The book develops strategies for approaching the study of an ancient culture through sensitive critical readings of its literary productions.
