Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism. Although his Amsterdam Stock Exchange, with its rational mastery of materials and space, has long been celebrated for its seminal influence on the architecture of the 20th century, Berlage's writings are highlighted here. Bringing together Berlage's most important texts, among them \

Sexual Behavior in the Human Female

Sexual Behavior in the Human Female
By:"Alfred Charles Kinsey","Institute for Sex Research"
Published on 1953 by Indiana University Press

Sexual Behavior in the Human Female was originally published in 1953, five years after the male volume. The material presented in this book was derived from personal interviews with nearly 6,000 women; from studies in sexual anatomy, physiology, psychology, and endocrinology. The book presents data on the incidence and frequency with which women participate in various types of sexual activity. The authors show how such factors as age, decade of birth, and religious adherence are reflected in patterns of sexual behavior. Some measure of the social significance of the various types of sexual behavior is provided. The authors make comparisons of female and male sexual activities, and investigate the factors which account for the similarities and differences between female and male patterns of behavior.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Published on 2002 by Class Publishing Ltd

As many as 1 in 30 adults and 1 in 100 children currently suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It is much more common than was previously thought, with up to 2 million people being affected in the UK. Sufferers experience intrusive thoughts and anxieties resulting in compulsive behaviour that can seem bizarre to those that have no experience of the disorder. Why would someone feel compelled to touch the four walls of a room in a clockwise fashion as soon as he enters it? Why would someone look at an object 3 times with his right eye, followed by his left eye?OCD sufferers are aware that these rituals are excessive and irrational, but they cannot control their behaviour. They are plagued by intrusive thoughts that they cannot banish from their mind and are often tormented by these thoughts which they find profoundly disgusting or upsetting. The cause of OCD is still not known, but it does appear to run in families and can occur together with other disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and Tourette s syndrome.Dr Frederick Toates, an experimental psychologist relates his own experiences of obsessional neurosis and his successful quest for a cure in th

Current Treatments of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Current Treatments of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
By:"Michele Tortora Pato","Joseph Zohar"
Published on 2008-11-01 by American Psychiatric Pub

During the 10 years since publication of the first edition of this comprehensive volume, progress in neuroscience has had direct and immediate clinical implications in both the pharmacological and psychological arenas in the treatment of one of psychiatry's greatest challenges: obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This second edition reflects this progress. Chapters include the latest data on the use of all current OCD treatments in special populations, such as the strictly religious, the elderly, children, adolescents, and those who are pregnant, and all are illustrated with new and updated detailed case histories that highlight specific treatments and diagnostic issues. This edition includes Three new pharmacotherapy chapters that discuss the use of sertraline, paroxetine, and citalopram and updates of the original edition's chapters on clomipramine, fluoxetine, and fluvoxamine An expanded chapter on children and adolescents that emphasizes the benefits of early detection, and describes the latest findings in immunological research with particular regard to pediatric autoimmune neurologic disorders associated with streptococcal infection (PANDAS) An expanded behavioral therapy chapter that encompasses not only detailed treatment plans for both individuals and groups (including multifamily groups) but also up-to-date empirical data to support their use The latest data on compounds for treating OCD (twice the number of compounds are now available than when the first edition was published), including details of the dramatic increase in our knowledge of pharmacokinetics, receptor profiles, interactions, and comparative efficacy during the past decade The clinical implications of today's broadened definition of OCD, which includes disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, pathological gambling, and Tourette's syndrome, and the complicated diagnostic and management issues -- with a call for innovative treatment approaches -- raised by the intimate relationship between OCD and schizophrenia (15% of patients with schizophrenia also have OCD) A multidisciplinary approach to treatment-resistant OCD, which occurs in approximately 30% of all cases, suggesting ways to combine our current knowledge and focus it on the treatment of a specific individual With their extensive clinical and research experience in treating OCD, the distinguished contributors to this volume provide clinicians with the latest, most reliable data so that they may better match treatment approaches with each patient's unique needs. Of enduring practical value, this updated \

Neurobiology of Grooming Behavior

Neurobiology of Grooming Behavior
By:"Allan V. Kalueff","Justin L. La Porte","Carisa L. Bergner"
Published on 2010-05-20 by Cambridge University Press

Grooming is among the most evolutionary ancient and highly represented behaviours in many animal species. It represents a significant proportion of an animal's total activity and between 30-50% of their waking hours. Recent research has demonstrated that grooming is regulated by specific brain circuits and is sensitive to stress, as well as to pharmacologic compounds and genetic manipulation, making it ideal for modelling affective disorders that arise as a function of stressful environments, such as stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. Over a series of 12 chapters that introduce and explicate the field of grooming research and its significance for the human and animal brain, this book covers the breadth of grooming animal models while simultaneously providing sufficient depth in introducing the concepts and translational approaches to grooming research. Written primarily for graduates and researchers within the neuroscientific community.

Becoming Alcoholic

Becoming Alcoholic
By:"David R. Rudy"
Published on 1986-01-01 by SIU Press

Affiliation with Alcoholics Anonymous parallels religious conversion, according to David R. Rudy in this timely study of the most famous self-help organization in the world. Drinkers who commit themselves to Alcoholics Anonymous embrace the radically different life-style, the altered world of the convert. To understand this conversion and, more important, to get a grip on the even deeper mystery of alcoholism itself, Rudy sought to answer these three questions: What processes are involved in becoming alcoholic? How does the alcoholic affiliate with, and become committed to, A. A.’s belief system? What is the relation\u00adship between the world of A. A. members and that constructed by alcohologists? Rudy establishes the history and structure of A. A. and examines the organization’s relationship to dominant sociological models, theories, and definitions of alcoholism.

Thing of Beauty

Thing of Beauty
By:"Stephen Fried"
Published on 2011-12-06 by Simon and Schuster

At age seventeen, Gia Carangi was working the counter at her father's Philadelphia luncheonette, Hoagie City. Within a year, Gia was one of the top models of the late 1970's, gracing the covers of Cosmopolitan and Vogue, partying at New York's Studio 54 and the Mudd Club, and redefining the industry's standard of beauty. She was the darling of moguls and movie stars, royalty and rockers. Gia was also a girl in pain, desperate for her mother's approval—and a drug addict on a tragic slide toward oblivion, who started going directly from $10,000-a-day fashion shoots to the heroin shooting galleries on New York's Lower East Side. Finally blackballed from modeling, Gia entered a vastly different world on the streets of New york and Atlantic City, and later in a rehab clinic. At twenty-six, she became on of the first women in America to die of AIDS, a hospital welfare case visited only by rehab friends and what remained of her family. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with Gia's gamily, lovers, friends, and colleagues, Thing of Beauty creates a poignant portrait of an unforgettable character—and a powerful narrative about beauty and sexuality, fame and objectification, mothers and daughters, love and death.

Daily Affirmations for Adult Children of Alcoholics

Daily Affirmations for Adult Children of Alcoholics
By:"Rokelle Lerner"
Published on 1996-11-01 by HCI

The messages that we give to ourselves are the most important messages we hear. The internal briefings and conversations we hold determine our attitudes, our behavior and the course of our lives. If, as children, we were criticized and shamed, our internal dialogue will be self-deprecating. If we are used to large doses of self-imposed sarcasm and negative reviews of our daily performance, we gradually mutilate our self-esteem, our creativity and our spirit. As adult children of alcoholics, we can continue to remain in the past and believe the negatives that we were taught; or we can change our beliefs with affirmative thoughts that can set us free into better and more expansive experiences. What we choose to believe will ultimately rule our world. Affirmations are a way to wake us up--to make us fully conscious and aware of the daily choices we make. And, as we learn to direct our thoughts, our feelings and behavior will naturally follow.

Beauty

Beauty
By:"Robin McKinley"
Published on 2014-11-18 by Open Road Media

Robin McKinley’s acclaimed first novel is a brilliant reimagining of the classic French fairy tale I was the youngest of three daughters. Our literal-minded mother named us Grace, Hope, and Honour. . . . My father still likes to tell the story of how I acquired my odd nickname: I had come to him for further information when I first discovered that our names meant something besides you-come-here. He succeeded in explaining grace and hope, but he had some difficulty trying to make the concept of honour understandable to a five-year-old. . . . I said: ‘Huh! I’d rather be Beauty.’ . . . By the time it was evident that I was going to let the family down by being plain, I’d been called Beauty for over six years. . . . I wasn’t really very fond of my given name, Honour, either . . . as if ‘honourable’ were the best that could be said of me. The sisters’ wealthy father loses all his money when his merchant fleet is drowned in a storm, and the family moves to a village far away. Then the old merchant hears what proves to be a false report that one of his ships had made it safe to harbor at last, and on his sad, disappointed way home again he becomes lost deep in the forest and has a terrifying encounter with a fierce Beast, who walks like a man and lives in a castle. The merchant’s life is forfeit, says the Beast, for trespass and the theft of a rose—but he will spare the old man’s life if he sends one of his daughters: “Your daughter would take no harm from me, nor from anything that lives in my lands.” When Beauty hears this story—for her father had picked the rose to bring to her—her sense of honor demands that she take up the Beast’s offer, for “cannot a Beast be tamed?”

Couple of Diets to Control Seizures

Couple of Diets to Control Seizures
By:"Gerald Yemoto"
Published on 2004-12 by iUniverse

This is a book of two diets I tried to control my epileptic seizures. No medications seemed to control the seizures I had. Not until I seen the Charlie Foundation present an Introduction of the Ketogenic Diet, did I ever consider dieting would control my seizures. In August 1996 I began the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet controlled my seizure better than any medications I tried. Because of my age (adult) it was hard to seek professional help that practiced the diet, since it is practiced on children only. Dieticians of a Children's Hospital nearby did coach me though the diet. Not until seven years later did I notice that certain foods were being eaten just before I had a seizure, specifically pasta. I began researching the possible cause of seizures and gluten appeared. I looked back on my records while I was on the Ketogenic Diet and noticed I had certain foods before having seizures. Those foods had gluten in it. Gluten sensitivity is becoming more prevalent as it is studied. Being unsuccessful contacting the medical profession I decided to write a book of both diets that helped me controlling seizures. Both diets may even help weight loss.

Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, and the Road to Recovery

Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, and the Road to Recovery
By:"Barry Stimmel"
Published on 2002 by Psychology Press

Gain a fuller understanding of substance addiction and treatment options! Originally published in 1992 as The Facts About Drug Use, this updated edition contains new information about the effects of alcohol and recreational, mood-altering drugs on the body. The multiple causes of drug use and the options available to those dependent on drugs as a way of life are thoroughly and clearly described. Drug use affects nearly 1 out of 2 Americans and cuts across every social and economic boundary. The effects of addiction on the individual are great, and the cumulative effects on society are staggering. Knowledge of the adverse effects of mood-altering drugs and why and how they are used excessively is a centerpiece of this book. It presents, intelligently and interestingly, ways to identify persons at risk and identify problems that the addicted encounter in attempts to become drug free. Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, and the Road to Recovery: Life on the Edge is an essential tool in both finding available resources for drug users and developing appropriate responses to today's drug problem. This remarkable, well-referenced book enables those with little or no background in science or health care to understand the complex issues surrounding drug use. It provides current, reliable, and unbiased information on methods for dealing with dependency upon alcohol and central nervous system depressants, hallucinogens, heroin, nicotine, marijuana, caffeine, amphetamines, designer drugs like Ecstasy, and steroids. A glossary listing common street names for drugs will be invaluable to those interested in identifying specific substances. This comprehensive volume will show you: who typically uses drugs and the reasons why they do how to classify mood-altering drugs how to identify and treat drug dependency areas of special concern such as multiple drug use, AIDS and drug use, drugs and pregnancy, drugs and sports, and drug testing technology Chapter by chapter, this nonjudgmental book helps readers develop a better understanding of the effects of mood-altering substances and the reasons many continue to use them despite serious consequences. Obsessive-compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive Disorder
By:"Dan J. Stein","Naomi Fineberg"
Published on 2007 by Oxford University Press, USA

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessional thinking, compulsive behaviour and varying degrees of anxiety and depression. Studies have shown OCD to be one of the more common psychiatric disorders, with a lifetime prevalence estimated at 2%-3%, approximately twice that of schizophrenia. OCD is also considered to be one of the most disabling of psychiatric disorders (and medical disorders for that matter) and presents a tremendous economic and social burden, both for the individual/family and for society at large. There has been a recent increase in research in the field of aetiology, neural substrates and cognitive effects of OCD that are likely to lead to advances in treatment. Part of the Oxford Psychiatry Library series, this pocketbook provides clinicians with a succinct and practical introduction to the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of OCD and OCD-related conditions. Individual chapters cover the phenomenology, psychobiology, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of OCD. The book also includes a helpful resources chapter, including reproductions of the major rating scales used to assess patients with OCD (Y-BOCS, CY-BOCS, DY-BOCS, and CGI) as well as information sources for both clinicians and patients. The book serves as an invaluable quick reference for clinical psychiatrists, trainee psychiatrists, psychiatric specialist nurses and other mental health care professionals, as well as interested general practitioners.
